The 2009 National Audio Theatre Festivals

Audio Theatre Workshop

The National Audio Theatre Festivals is proud to host the 28th annual Audio Theater Workshop in West Plains, MO, from June 21 to 27, 2009. This unique audio arts training week is dedicated to all areas of audio production, with a look toward future technology.

The 2009 ATW will offer concurrent Foundation Classes and round table discussions in all aspects of audio theater production including: writing, performance, recording, mixing, sound-design, and distribution, concluding with a live performance on Friday, June 26, 2009, which will be broadcast, webcast and recorded. Show elements will come from workshop classes and participants and special pieces selected in advance. Show highlights will include:

  • DARWIN, produced and directed by Dwight Frizzel; Michael Henry, composer/conductor: an audio-theater experimental operetta dramatizing the life of Charles Darwin, presenting him in historical context, with period musical references, nature soundscapes in surround, and scenes from his extraordinary life as told through his own words and writings, and the words of those who knew him – both his attackers and defenders.
  • OVER THERE, produced and directed by Eric Somers and Meredith Ludwig: an oral history presentation about military veterans, consisting of sound collages of live voice artists speaking the words of veterans from one hundred years of war, based on recorded interviews. The piece will try to convey the remembered sounds, thoughts and feelings of veterans in a polyphonic audio theatre context.
  • WORKSHOP 101: EDGAR ALLEN POE, produced by William Dufris (voice of “Bob the Builder”) and Butch D’Ambrosio (writer for MAD Magazine): a special workshop for artists new to the world of audio drama, who over the course of the week will adapt a short story by Poe (exact title TBD) into an audio drama piece, which they then perform during the end-of-week performance.

Registration forms are available through the National Audio Theatre Festivals website at www.natf.org. For more information, contact Executive Director Sonia James at workshop@natf.org.

The National Audio Theatre Festivals, formerly the Midwest Radio Theatre Workshop, is a not-for-profit organization that includes a group of experienced audio theatre, radio drama and radio theatre producers and participants.
