If you didn’t listen to WFHB Sunday evening, this is what you missed:
Major Stars featured in new British radio drama for Valentine’s Day
‘SOFT CENTRES’ to be aired February 15 on Fire House Theatre
Sir Derek Jacobi and Joanna Lumley star in ‘SOFT CENTRES,’ a new radio play by Carl Chetty from Promising Productions in the U.K. Sir Derek is familiar to Americans for many acclaimed performances, including the title roles in ‘I, CLAUDIUS’ and ‘BROTHER CADFAEL’ on PBS. Joanna Lumley is best known here for playing Patsy in the hilarious British comedy ‘ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS.’
Fire House Theatre is heard Sundays from 8-10 p.m. on WFHB. Host Richard Fish is excited about the upcoming premiere, and also somewhat amazed. “It is absolutely fabulous to be the first people to hear such a wonderful story with major stars, and even more so because the play comes all the way across the Atlantic,” he said.
‘SOFT CENTRES’ tells the story of two middle-aged people who work in a confectioners’ shop. “We find out how they love each other,” explained Fish, “even though at first it certainly seems like they don’t! The writing, performances, and production are all just lovely.”
Peter Brown, the producer and head of Promising Productions, will call in from London at 9 p.m., and talk live on the air about the play, the stars, and British audio theatre in general, before ‘SOFT CENTRES’ begins at 9:15. The play is about 45 minutes long. “It’s very good of Peter to be willing to stay up so late and call us,” said Fish, pointing out that the time-zone of British capital is five hours later than Bloomington.
Starting at 8 p.m., the first hour of Fire House Theatre will feature a repeat broadcast of ‘THE CURSE OF 589,’ a delightful Irish-flavored love story from Norman Corwin, starring Samantha Eggar, William Shatner, and Carl Reiner. “We really do love our listeners,” said Fish with a grin, “and it’s a treat to be able to send them two very special Valentines on the air.”
