BBC News has published a list of entertainers included on the New Year Honours List (Pratchett leads showbiz honours; Wednesday, 31 December 2008; BBC News).

According to The UK Honours System ( http://www.honours.gov.uk/ ), the honours system is used to “reward people for merit, service or bravery.” Honours are normally awarded twice a year and a list is published on The Queen’s Birthday in June and at the New Year.

Among the entertainers being honored are author Terry Pratchett, jazz star Courtney Pine, singer Robert Plant, actor Michael Sheen, actress Liz Smith, former head of BBC radio Jenny Abramsky, orchestral conductor Owain Arwel Hughes, and concert pianist and conductor Howard Shelley.

Lit Between the Ears takes special notice of the former head of BBC radio Jenny Abramsky, now Dame Jenny, and her comments that the honour “recognises the importance of radio” in the UK. Continuing her quote:

Radio is an astonishing medium that people feel passionate about and I’m proud to have played a part in ensuring that it continues to thrive.”

Lit Between the Ears, which celebrates the Power and People of Dramatic Audio – including Radio Drama – salutes all the entertainers on the New Year Honours List and applauds Dame Jenny on her Honours recognition and her work to ensure that radio “continues to thrive.”
