ELLENVILLE, NY, October 4, 2007 - According to The New York Times 69 years ago, “a wave of mass hysteria seized thousands of radio listeners when a broadcast of a dramatization of H. G. Wells” fantasy, “The War of the Worlds,” led thousands to believe that an interplanetary conflict had started, with invading Martians spreading wide death and destruction in New Jersey and New York.”

Hopefully, there will be less hysteria and more fun emanating from the stage at Ellenville, NY’s Shadowland Theatre on Sunday 28 October at 7:00 pm when a cast drawn from the Greater Ellenville area’s public officials and village residents celebrate Halloween with a live radio reading of Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater classic that will be performed as a special benefit for Shadowland Theatre with tickets priced at $15.00 per person, $10.00 for students.

Wreaking less havoc while generating construction funds

“The 1938 broadcast disrupted households, interrupted religious services, created traffic jams and clogged communications systems,” said Shadowland’s Brendan Burke, producing artistic director who is bringing the radio drama to life on stage. “Hopefully, we’ll wreak less havoc and generate some valuable dollars for our building fund with winter ahead.”

In addition to a cast that includes Dennis Warner, WELV radio deejay twice voted best deejay in the Best of Hudson Valley magazine award program and Mayor Jeff Kaplan, the Orson Welles role will be played by Joe Bevilacqua, a frequent contributor to National Public Radio, who also writes weekly for the Ellenville Journal.

Tickets for the “War of the Worlds” benefit performance ($15.00; $10.00 for students) and all Lobby Concerts ($15.00) are on sale now at the Shadowland Theatre box office at 157 Canal Street or by phone at 845-647-5511 and www.shadowlandtheatre.org.
