Dramatic Radio – Barbaro, in memoriam February 1, 2007

Posted by William Spear in >> Dramatic Radio.

Barbaro, the the winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby, who broke down in the early part of the Preakness, was euthanized on Monday 29 January 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals in Kennett Square, PA.

Unbeaten over five wins heading into the Derby, Barbaro electrified sports fans with a burst of speed and stamina to win the race. Immediately, speculation began of the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 ridden by Steve Cauthen.

But two weeks later, Barbaro shattered the bones in his right hind leg near the start of the Preakness. Thousands of fans at the event and millions more on television watched the limping horse and jockey Edgar Prado trying to soothe him.

Despite eight months of efforts from owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and Dr. Dean Richardson at the hospital, Barbaro’s condition worsened in recent weeks. Sunday evening, for the first time, Barbaro was so uncomfortable he refused to lie down and rest. The Jacksons and Dr. Richardson determined there was little more to be down for the horse and they decided to put him down. Flowers and expressions of sympathy began pouring in from around the world.

The passing of a champion in any sport is traumatic. In horse racing, the pounding strength of the animals is precariously balanced on their delicate bones. For Barbaro, circumstances in the Preakness tipped the scales against him.

Mourn his passing but remember his triumph as memorialized by Dave Johnson on the Westwood One radio network. His call of the 2006 Kentucky Derby is excerpted here starting midway through the race.

. . .

What a champion. Rest in peace, Barbaro.
