L.A. Theatre Works

This Saturday, May 2 from 10 pm – midnight on 89.3 KPCC and online at www.scpr.org/programs/latw/, L.A. Theatre Works will air The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, starring Julie Harris, Calista Flockhart, Zeljko Ivanek, and Kevin Kilner – recreating their original roles from the Tony Award-winning Broadway production.  Williams’ classic memory-play about an eccentric Southern family: the domineering Amanda Wingfield and her grown children, cynical Tom and fragile Laura.

Next Saturday, May 9 from 10 pm – midnight on 89.3 KPCC and online at www.scpr.org/programs/latw/, L.A. Theatre Works will air Major Barbara by George Bernard Shaw, starring Roger Rees, Kate Burton, Hamish Linklater and Kirsten Potter.  The classic Shavian comedy that could have been written today.  Barbara is a Major in the Salvation Army, but she’s also the daughter of Andrew Undershaft, a multi-millionaire arms manufacturer.  He doesn’t care who or what his weapons have destroyed, but he does care who will inherit his business.  A family power struggle ensues, with Barbara and her father battling over the answer to the question:  Does salvation come through faith or finance?  The broadcast includes an interview with acclaimed theater director Ethan McSweeny, who directed a production of “Major Barbara” for Washington DC’s Shakespeare Theatre Company in 2008.

Today, Saturday, October 18 from 10 pm – midnight on 89.3 KPCC, L.A. Theatre Works’ The Play’s the Thing will air Summer and Smoke by Tennessee Williams, starring Sarah Zimmerman, Tina Sanchez, David Selby, Armin Shimerman and Tegan West.  A sensuous portrait of sexual repression that is as sultry as the sweltering heat of its Mississippi setting.  Alma Winemiller secretly harbors a lifelong spiritual love for the boy next door, Dr. John Buchanan, but the rakish John is focused solely on sexual conquest. Their intense relationship becomes a battle for his body and her soul.

L.A. On XM Satellite Radio, The Play’s the Thing now airs on Sonic Theater three times a week.  Each broadcast premieres on Friday evening at 8 pm eastern/5 pm pacific and repeats the following Monday in the same time slot.  On Wednesday, XM offers an encore performance of a previously-broadcast program.
