The Play’s The Thing

This Saturday, January 24 from 10 pm – midnight on 89.3 KPCC, L.A. Theatre Works’ The Play’s the Thing will air The Young Man from Atlanta by Horton Foote. Shirley Knight recreates her Tony-nominated performance in this 1995 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama. In 1950′s Houston, an affluent couple is transformed by tragedy when their son dies under mysterious circumstances and the husband loses his job of 40 years. David Selby also stars. The broadcast includes an interview with Shirley Knight.

Next Saturday, January 31 from 10 pm – midnight on 89.3 KPCC, L.A. Theatre Works’ The Play’s the Thing will air Pack of Lies by Hugh Whitemore, starring Julian Sands, David Selby, Roxanne Hart, Rosalind Ayres and Martin Jarvis. Actual events during the Cold War inspired this thriller that takes place in a suburb of London during the winter of 1961. Loyalty, duty and friendship collide when the Jacksons slowly discover that the Krogers, their neighbors and cherished friends, are not exactly who they appear to be.

Theatre Works’ The Play’s the Thing will air This Town by Sidney Blumenthal, starring Richard Kind, Roy Leonard, Gates McFadden, Steve Pickering, and John Randolph. Sidney Blumenthal, White House presidential advisor, renowned journalist and author of numerous books on American politics (including the bestseller The Clinton Wars), takes us inside the well-groomed Washington Press Corps, who yawn when they hear about peace treaties but snap to attention at the chance to uncover a little dirt on the First Dog. Theatre Works’ The Play’s the Thing will air The Autumn Garden by Lillian Hellman, starring Julie Harris, Glenne Headly, Shirley Knight, David Clennon and Scott Wolf. A Chekhovian comedy from Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lillian Hellman about the sad and funny frailties of human existence. As the summer of 1949 draws to a close, a group of middle-aged friends are gathering for their annual retreat at a genteel Southern resort. An acquaintance from the past thrusts himself into the yearly gathering, forcing them to re-examine their mundane yet seemingly idyllic existence, the opportunities they’ve lost, and the lives that have passed them by. Theatre Works‘ The Play’s the Thing airs a Thanksgiving tradition, John Steinbeck‘s The Grapes of Wrath.  The 19-member cast is led by Shirley Knight, Jeffrey Donovan, and Francis Guinan, with original music performed by The Joel Rafael Band.  Driven by the rhythms of country fiddles and campground guitars, this Tony Award-winning adaptation by Frank Galati tells the compelling story of the Joad family’s trek from the Oklahoma dust bowl to the fields of California during the Great Depression. Theatre Works‘ The Play’s the Thing will air The Rivalry by Norman CorwinDavid Strathairn and Paul Giamatti star as Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, rivals for the U.S. Senate – one a rising Illinois legislator and abolitionist candidate of the newly formed Republican party, the other the Democratic incumbent and champion of states’ rights.  Join L.A. Theatre Works on this pre-election day weekend for a rare and timely revival of Corwin’s Broadway play, taken from the transcripts of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates that tackled the day’s most passionate issue – slavery. Also starring Lily Rabe as Adele Douglas, the young wife of Senator Douglas through whose lens we witness the proceedings.   Eric Simonson, 2006 Academy Award-winner for his documentary The Golden Age of Norman Corwin, directs.  The broadcast includes an interview with Paul Giamatti and David Strathairn.
