“I need cash” from Bridging the Gap, the Sequel

April 20, 2008

Laura M. Holson’s fine article, BRIDGING THE GAP, THE SEQUEL (April 15, 2008; New York Times online) describes the current divide between the mindsets of the entertainment industry and venture capitalists.

Ms. Holson relays a conversation between a Hollywood producer and Silicon Valley executive. The executive explained much of Silicon Valley’s wealth was created through stock options. Then the executive asked if the producer would consider accepting stock options instead of cash.

Quoting Holson’s article:

“The Hollywood producer remarked, “I fly a G4 (Gulfstream jet). How far do you think my G4 will go on stock options? I need cash.”

Perhaps this insight is an opportunity. Rather than front-load funding for audio drama projects, a longer term perspective may be ultimately be more successful.

Accepting options for equity in a company built around a portfolio of audio drama projects and related initiatives affords an opportunity to build a grander scale of success than any one project might deliver. Extending options in the company to key personnel focuses everyone’s energy on building the best entertainment proposition commercially and creatively possible.

Anyone have a number for Silicon Valley?

Coburn’s two-hander, The Gin Game, starring Katherine Helmond and Harris Yulin; and The Actor Retires by Bruce Norris, staring Bruce Norris, William Petersen, Amy Morton and D.W. Moffett.  “The Gin Game” deftly mixes comedy and tragedy as an elderly man and woman play gin rummy on the porch of an old-age home.  “The Actor Retires” is an hilarious, almost surreal journey into the life of an actor who decides to end his career and become a furniture maker.

L.A. Lit Between the Ears Welcomes Joseph R. Sgro

April 11, 2008

Lit Between the Ears is pleased to introduce Joseph R. Sgro, author of “Faith in Christ”, to our readers.

Speaking with Joseph:

. . . there are many folks who, like I, have reached a point in life where, although successful, we’re still missing something. Perhaps that something is Jesus.

Faith in Christ: The Journey Out of Loneliness explores the depths of author Joseph Sgro’s struggle to understand why the man-made successes of our world have little meaning. He also questions his belief in Jesus and searches for meaning behind all the emptiness and loneliness that most of us harbor.

Eventually, Sgro comes to terms with just how broken the human race is, and he understands that the love of Jesus is the only avenue that will lead us to a better life.

Again quoting Sgro:

The world around us contains much that can inspire us to look toward the one and only Savior. Stop walking in darkness, stop kidding yourself, and stop looking for man-made answers. Open your heart, and let Faith in Christ be your guide on the spiritual journey to the light of Jesus Christ, the rock of our salvation.

Author Bio

Joseph R. Sgro moved to the rural countryside of New Jersey with his wife and daughter after years of working in the aerospace field. After establishing a drafting business, Sgro began a journey into scripture, which helped him discover Christ. Mr. Sgro is currently engaged in  book signing events as well as talk radio interviews.
