Why radio works: From First Broadcasts to Knockout Punches to “He made the catch” to “After 54 years, your long wait is over”, 20 Great Moments over the Last 20 Years

June 29, 2007

One of the many, great aspects of living and working in New Jersey USA is the high quality of entertainment. From music to theatre to food to the shore, every day and night offers a means to enjoy the moment.

Sports are significant in the metropolitan New Jersey area. Baseball, basketball, football, and hockey are represented. Golf, tennis, and running capture attention regularly.

Over the last 20 years, WFAN 66 AM ( http://www.wfan.com/ ) has broadcast and commented upon the excitement of sports. In celebration of their 20th anniversary, the station released a list of the Top Twenty Moments as voted by its fans and listeners. The list, which may be heard at http://www.wfan.com/pages/627821.php , replays many memorable moments since the station first aired on 1 July 1987. Kudos to WFAN for 20 years of memorable and engaging sports broadcasts and commentaries.

Radio works. Whether playing ball, tipping it off, kicking off, dropping the puck, teeing it up, serving it, or crossing the finish line, radio works.

Why radio works: Mr. Jobs, radio drama will make your iPhone sound bigger than any movie ever will

June 25, 2007

Ms. Laura M. Holson’s article titled Hollywood Seeks Ways to Fit Its Content Into the Realm of the iPhone (Published 25 June 2007, New York Times) chronicles the impact of Apple’s pending release of its iPhone. Movie studios throughout Hollywood are rushing to get movies onto the next generation of mobile phone. Without question, visual content will survive and prosper on cellphones and undoubtedly Mr. Jobs and Apple will be leading the way.

However, radio drama can flourish irrespective of the new mobile phones’ video capabilities. Radio’s unique capacity to thrill, chill, fascinate, educate, terrorize, dramatize, or humorize can succeed with only a speaker.

Mr. Jobs, radio drama can magnify the brilliance of Apple’s new iPhone many times beyond what any movie can do. And Hollywood, radio can be big and bold without being shrunk down to accommodate anything.

Radio works. With or without the tiny screen.
